Encouraging kids to choose alternatives to riding in a single family car

During the month of May, The Sebastopol Safe Routes to School program offered Sebastopol Union School District Students the chance to win a bike. The Frequent Rider Mile Contest encouraged kids to choose alternatives to riding in a single family car on their way to/from school each day.

Park Side Elementary School, Pine Crest Elementary School and Brook Haven Middle School students kept track of how often they walked, rode their bikes, or carpooled to and from school each day. As they accumulated points, students had the chance to fill out raffle tickets to win a new bicycle and various other prizes. Here are the bicycle winners:

Brandon Michaelson of Park Side Elementary School, lives in Santa Rosa but is an avid carpooler and diligently kept track of the many times he carpooled during May.

Pine Crest Elementary School’s Galen Skinner won a new bike also. Liz Schott, Pine Crest principal, says that out of all the students who attend Pine Crest, Galen is the one who most often arrives to school on his bike or by foot.

The bicycle winner at Brookhaven Middle School was Kota Mizutani, who is also an avid bicyclist. Kota said, “It will be nice to have a new bike, I’ve been riding a hand-me-down all year.”
